Definition of Dique

This word is used in a common and colloquial way in the Dominican Republic where Dominicans, being so creative and jocular have taken possession of words that have in a formal way a different meaning, but they use it to decorate their conversations, for sample a button.

The word dike formally means retaining wall, or wall made to retain water.

A measure taken to prevent the spread of something harmful.
From this terminology different meanings are derived, such as: reservoir dock, floating dock, dry dock or hull dock, among others, each of the aforementioned are still containment structures, but they are intended to contain different materials.

It turns out that this same word “dique”, which has originated from the degradation suffered from the term “Dizque”, has a twin brother that would become the word “quizque”, it is used in Colombia to express doubt, irony or skepticism to a greater degree than that communicated by the word dizque.
