Definition of Payola

The word payola comes from the English verb “pay”, and is used to refer to the act of pressure on a company dedicated to the music business, through “donations” or threats to  promote  certain artists or groups musical, so that these are benefited with priorities, but this is not all what payola means.

In the music industry, “payola” is when record labels (and their intermediaries) pay the radio to play songs and play those songs over and over again, without revealing the fact that the songs were paid to listeners of Radio.
