Peritonitis

Definition of Peritonitis

In medicine, the ending “itis” refers to inflammation, the “peritoneum” on the other hand, is the tissue that lines the interior of the abdomen and the organs within it, that is, that “peritonitis” is inflammation of the peritoneum, although it can also mean its rupture.

Causes of Peritonitis

This disease is regularly caused by a bacterial infection, blood or pus accumulated in the perineum, however, the causes of this disease are also due to:

  • Rupture of the appendix caused by appendicitis.
  • Bacteria spread outside the pancreas due to pancreatitis.
  • Perforation of the colon or injuries that allow the entry of bacteria from other areas of the body to the peritoneum . 

Symptoms of Peritonitis

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Sensitivity
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Dehydration
  • Loss of appetite

Despite all these signs and symptoms that the patient presents during peritonitis, the one that really makes them go to the doctor urgently, is intense abdominal pain, since it can become so unbearable that it prevents them from finding a posture with which feel comfortable. 

Side effects of Peritonitis

Something to be very careful about is that a person who has suffered from peritonitis is highly likely to relapse into this dangerous disease, this probability is even higher than that of a patient who has never had it. . 

Acute abdominal pain never represents normality in the human body, which is why immediately after feeling it, it is advisable to go to the nearest hospital to rule out any serious illness or treat it if necessary. 

In case it is peritonitis and it is not diagnosed immediately, the infection could spread through the bloodstream turning into a serious situation.
