Definition of Implicatura

Implicatura is a coined term HP Grice, which was an American philosopher who contributed a lot to the philosophy of language. Here at The Wan Shi Tong Library, we will tell you what is the meaning of implicatura and also see some examples of conversational implicatura.

By implicatura is understood the information that the sender can transmit without explicitly saying it in the dialogue. Therefore, the implicatura allows the listener to draw conclusions that derive from the intention of the issuer.

Examples of Conversational Implicatura:

In the phrase “I only went with Helena out of courtesy”, the implicaturas are:

  • He has no other interest with Helena.
  • He was forced to take her out with Helena.
