Cartas del tarot

Definition of Cartas del tarot

Cartas del tarot (Tarot cards in English) are decks of cards that are used to play with or with which it is possible to guess the future. This type of cartomancy would allow to interpret the past and the present, as well as to guess the future.

Others believe that it is even possible to interpret dreams.

This is the name given to a set of symbols printed on plates or cards attributed to the legendary Hermes Trimegistus, and which are commonly used for prediction, having come down to us from very ancient times by means of the so-called gypsies or Bohemians.

SYNONYMS FOR Cartas del tarot

  1. Card to predict the future.
  2. Fortune teller deck.

ORIGIN OF Cartas del tarot

There are several hypotheses about the origin of tarot. The first points to the so-called “official” tarot, which appeared in the 18th century in Europe, during the Enlightenment.

At that time, while many authors were searching for reason, others were engrossed in the secrets of nature and the occult, using cards from the European gypsies. From this emerges the second theory that the art of predicting the future comes from the gypsies.

A third theory, for which there is perhaps more evidence, mentions that tarot decks were first mentioned in Italy in the 14th century. However, the accuracy is doubtful in the archives that were found at that time. Around the year 1432, the commissioning of a deck of 78 cards is recorded, 74 of which have survived to the present day.

CURIOSITIES OF Cartas del tarot

Philippe Camoin, successor of one of the most ancient Tarot printers in Marseilles, and Alejandro Jodorowsky, the most internationally renowned tarot reader and filmmaker, affirm that the wise men of each religion kept the sacred secrets of humanity in the popular cards, as a precaution before wars and confrontations put an end to this ancestral knowledge.
