Caribbean slang is extremely rich and Dominicans are not left behind. Spanish speakers are very creative when it comes to using vocabulary, something that is especially evident in the way they speak.

Often the words that are used come from Anglicisms, or are rather improvised or corrupt derivations of other terms in disuse. They also mean different things in the different countries where they are used.

For example, the word amemao is used very frequently in the Dominican Republic to designate a person who is too slow, too stupid, slow or clumsy.

An example of the use of this expression in this sense can be: “Don’t assign that task to José’s amemao”.

However, another meaning of amemao may refer to some person who allows himself to be influenced, without any benefit, by someone else.

In Peru it is used to refer to an individual who lets himself be handled by his wife, therefore the expression: “José is an amemao, look how the wife has dominated him” is often used.
